Granites – The Basics

  • What is granite?

Granite is a tough, durable rock composed primarily of three different minerals –feldspar, quartz and biotite or mica. The white mineral grains – perhaps the most abundant found in granite - are feldspar. The light gray, glass-like grains are quartz, and the black grains are biotite or black mica.  – Useful Granite Information – its Weight, Composition…, Granite from Wikipedia

  • What are the physical & chemical properties of granite?

  • When were granites formed?

Granites in various parts of the world have different ages. For instance, those at the bottom of the Grand Canyon have ages of about 1.5 billion years (yikes, that is 1,500,000,000 years!). There are granites that are almost 2 billion years old, and granite formations in some other parts have ages of only about 100 million years (that is just 100,000,000 years, a rather young age, wouldn’t you agree!).

  • What are the various types of granites?

Granite is available in three main varieties: Biotite Granite, Hornblende Granite, Tourmaline Granite. Of these, the Biotite variety is the most prevalent. Based on the composition and colour, there are granites that have hundreds of different shades. India, one of the major granite producing countries, alone has over 200 shades of granites.

  • In which parts of the world are granites found the most?

Granites occur in many parts of the world, but some countries have larger deposits than others. According to currently available data, the following countries have significant amount of granite deposits: Angola, Brazil, Canada, China, Finland, India, Iran, Italy, Namibia, Spain, South African Transkei, Ukraine, USA, Zimbabwe.

  • What are the typical prices of granites?

Never ask a woman her age, a man his salary…and a trader the price! Well, it is not easy to give an answer about prices in a short sentence since it depends on the type of granite you are looking for (Absolute Black, Black Galaxy etc..), whether you wish to procure a granite block, a tile, a slab or a monument, and so on. Add to it the fact there could be volume discounts. And you got to consider costs of transportation. So here is a price framework:

·        Base price of a granite product – usually in sq ft or sq meters unless you are looking at purchasing a granite block in which case it would be cu.ft or cu. Meters

·        Transportation costs – if you are taking control of the product directly from the factory, then what is charged is FOB (freight on board). If there is transportation required from the factory to your location, it would be CIF (cost, insurance and freight).

  • What is the process by which granites are quarried?

Granite is cut from the bed of the quarry with a jet piercing machine that produces a flame burning at very high temperatures. This high-velocity flame is directed at the granite to be removed. As the flame nozzle is moved up and down, a channel is created around large sections in the quarry. In some quarries, diamond wire saws are used. A long loop of small steel cable, impregenated with industrial diamond segments, cuts the sections free from the bed of the quarry. After a section has been completely wiresawed or channeled by the burner, it is separated from the bottom by explosives. Likewise, when high-speed drills are used, rows of drilled holes are loaded with explosives. The explosives are detonated to free the sections of granite on all sides and on the bottom. The large sections are then broken into workable sizes by wedging. In this process, steel wedges are driven manually into holes previously drilled along the desired line of cleavage. The sections are readily forced apart and cross-wedged into rectangular blocks. Large cranes, or derricks, lift these blocks to the quarry's rim.

  • What is the form of granites just after they are quarried?

Granites are in the form of large blocks right after they are quarried (Granite Blocks from India – World Stonex)

  • How are granite blocks cut into slabs?

Blocks are moved from the quarries. Blocks are then sent to the factories for sawing. After the uneven portions of the blocks are dressed with a wire saw, the blocks are cut into slabs by gang saw machines and polished by line polishing machines. Large and powerful machines called “gang saws” – essentially a number of saws working together – are used to cut granite blocks into slabs – The Quarrying & Manufacturing Process from Elberton Granite, Crafting a Mausoleum – the Slabbing Process

  • How are granite blocks cut into tiles?

Granite blocks are first cut to stone strips on a block-cutter with multiple cutting discs. Once the blockcutter creates stone strips, the strips are polished and cut on tile lines to ensure a perfectly calibrated size and finish. A slight bevel is then added at the edge of each piece to create a cushioned edge that will eliminate the sharpness.

·        How are granite monuments and memorials manufactured?

The granite blocks, taken from the quarries, are delivered to finishing plants where large diamond saws cut through the rough block of granite.

Once the blocks are sawed into slabs, smaller saws may be used to further define their size and shape. Sometimes, slabs relatively large slabs are fed into "guillotines" that effortlessly breaks the granite slabs into sizes needed for monuments and markers.

  • What are the tools and equipments used in granite quarrying and processing?

·         Automatic polisher applying a mirror-like finish to the granite

·         Large, diamond-tipped saws for cutting through a granite block

·         Computerized diamond wire saws that offer flexibility in shaping the granite and are used to cut the slabs into unusual shapes

·         Grinding, buffing pads and abrasives - used by granite polishing mills - to systematically create a mirror-like finish

·         Hammers, razor-sharp carbide tipped chisels, pneumatic tools, and sandblasting equipment to further carve, shape and define each individual monument. These are normally used by sandblasters

  • Types of granites found in the various parts of India

India has over 200 different shades of granites. These are distributed in many geographical locations in South India. Some of the primary locations of granite quarries in India are Bangalore and its surrounding areas, Chennai, Madurai, Hyderabad and some other areas in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Each location is known for specific types and shades of granites. More info from: Granite Types from India

  • What are the possible defects in granites? - The Marble & Granite Resin Process – How & Why
    • Tolerances - The thickness of gang sawn slabs will usually have tolerances of +/- 1 or 2 mm. For tiles, the tolerances will be much smaller
    • There can occur minor or major blotches on granites. Blotches can be tricky. Sometimes even large blotches will gel well with the rest of the surface, are thus are not normally as defects. There are other times when even minor blotches can stand out simply because they are not in harmony with the rest if the surface. A granite, it can be said, is very much in the eye of the beholder.

·        Difference between First Quality, Commercial Quality and Second Quality Granites:

o       First Quality materials comprises granites that are of very high quality and polished to be of a high gloss; There are no visual defects in the material.

o       Commercial Quality usually means that the polish is not quite as good and that there will be some obvious defects such as small natural hairline cracks and maybe some blotches in the material. A good sawyer and fabricator can use the slab to good use. These can be considered to be excellent buys for money since they are significantly cheaper than the first quality granites.

o       Second Quality granites will have many repairable natural defects and, most likely, blotches in the material. These should be typically used only where high quality is not of utmost importance.

  • What are the popular “names” of granites

Granites have interesting names. Typically (but not always), one would find the components in a granite name: The name of the location or country (for instance Brazilian Pink) and the color of the granite (Absolute Black). While in many cases the location part might not be present (eg., Chilli Red), most time the name of a granite will have a color component. Some typical names of granites are: Colombo Juparana, Jaipur Silk, Absolute Black, Black Galaxy, Bacardi White, Black Fantasy, Dakota Mahagony
